Safety improvements taking place at Auckland and Herbert intersection
Gladstone Regional Council will undertake safety improvements at the intersection of Auckland and Herbert Streets as part of the 2023/24 Capital Works program.
Works involve the installation of a traffic island along Auckland Street (south of Herbert Street), installation of an improved pedestrian kerb ramp, new line marking within the intersection and reduction in allowable length of vehicles from 10m to 6.5m for vehicles turning left along Herbert Street.
Gladstone Region Councillor Rick Hansen said safety improvements at the intersection are funded under the Black Spot Program.
“The Black Spot Program allows local governments, community and road user groups, industry and individuals to nominate a high priority site for funding,” Councillor Hansen said.
“Sites can be chosen based off past accidents, or sites at risk of future accidents where road traffic engineers have completed a Road Safety Audit and found that remedial work is necessary.
“Works have commenced with an expected completion in mid-September 2023, site conditions and weather permitting. “
Works will take place from Monday to Friday with some weekend work considered to manage traffic flows for specific aspects of the project.”
Night works are expected to be utilised where possible during the construction period to minimise the impact to traffic.
Some noise, dust and vibration can be expected from the site as well as interruptions to traffic movement and reduction in speed through the site, with nearby businesses and residents informed in advance of any major disruptions.
The Auckland/Herbert St Intersection - Kerb Extension is funded under the Australian Government’s Black Spot Program.
