Works commence at Boyne Tannum Memorial Parklands
Gladstone Regional Council has commenced upgrade works at Boyne Tannum Memorial Parklands to cater for the facility’s long-term use.
Works will involve improvements to the overflow car park, with dust suppression and carparking delineation taking place, while a passenger loading zone will be constructed near the chapel.
Work commenced on 12 February and is expected to be completed by 22 March, weather permitting. Gladstone Region Councillor Chris Cameron said these works form part of Council’s Gladstone Region Cemetery Plan 2022, an action plan developed by Council to set the future direction for cemeteries within the region.
“This plan will guide Council’s delivery of cemetery services across the region to ensure that our cemeteries are appropriately planned, built, used and maintained for the long term,” Councillor Cameron said.
“The work taking place at Boyne Tannum Memorial Parklands involves an upgrade to the overflow carpark and construction of a passenger drop-off point near the chapel to assist the elderly and those with mobility impairments when attending funeral services.
“Works are taking place at night to minimise disruptions to facility operations, including funeral and memorial ceremonies.
“Heavy machinery will operate at night and will be stored in the overflow carpark during the day, which means the overflow carpark will be closed to the public during this time.
“Local stakeholders including funeral service providers were informed of these works in advance.” Cr Cameron said further works will commence later and involve the construction of a columbarium wall for ashes interments.
“Boyne Tannum Memorial Parklands is the region’s primary ashes interment cemetery, so expanding capacity aligns with our Cemetery Plan,” he said.
“Sixty-nine per cent of funerals in the Gladstone Region involve cremation, while some of the region’s cemeteries do not offer ashes interment options.
“This is why it is important for Council to identify and respond to community needs.”
