‘Get Up! Stand Up! Show Up!’ for NAIDOC Week events and activities
NAIDOC Week 2022 is running from 3-10 July with plenty of free events and activities on offer to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island peoples.
This year’s theme is ‘Get Up! Stand Up! Show Up!’ and celebrates the long history of First Nations people rallying together to fight for change.
Gladstone Regional Council and local organisations will run events across the week.
Other events include the Get Up! Stand Up! Show Up! NAIDOC Expo at the Philip Street Communities and Families Precinct on Wednesday 6 July, NAIDOC March on Friday 8 July and more.
Gladstone Region Mayor Matt Burnett said the Get Up! Stand Up! Show Up! NAIDOC Expo was a new event in 2022.
“This event is an initiative of our Innovate – Reconciliation Action Plan designed to promote inclusiveness between Council and our region’s First Nations community,” Councillor Burnett said.
“There will be more than a dozen stallholders attending including community groups, health services, family services and other businesses, plus a petting zoo and balloon twisting for the kids and burgers courtesy of The Salvation Army.”
Cr Burnett said another new initiative will be the NAIDOC Digital Projections display, that is set to light up one side of Gladstone Regional Art Gallery & Museum (GRAGM) on Friday 8 July between 6pm-8pm.
“These impressive projections have been developed by artist Donna Maree Robinson and other local artists, with one projection featuring work from Queensland Arts Minister Leeanne Enoch,” he said.
Cr Burnett added that other events will take place at Tondoon Botanic Gardens and Gladstone Regional Libraries, including several children’s activities from stories to crafts.
“Gladstone Entertainment Convention Centre will also offer a 10 per cent discount during NAIDOC Week on tickets to the award-winning First Nations musical The Sapphires by using a special code at checkout,” he said.
“Council is proud to support NAIDOC Week events and activities throughout the Gladstone Region – home of the Bailai, Gurang, Gooreng Gooreng and Taribelang Bunda peoples.”
