Water mains renewal project to commence from Tuesday 6 July
As part of Gladstone Regional Council’s ongoing Capital Works program, work will begin on replacing a series of old water mains connection points from Tuesday 6 July.
The renewal works begin at New Auckland (encompassing Sandpiper Avenue from Lorikeet Avenue to Cockatoo Drive), move to Clinton in August (covering Aerodrome Road from J. Hickey Avenue to Clarke Street) and then move onto Gladstone Central in November (covering Auckland Street from Tank Street to Short Street).
Gladstone Region Mayor Matt Burnett said these water mains have been identified as nearing the end of their functional lives.
“They are located under the road surface and footpaths, so we urge motorists to drive carefully near the works areas and adhere to any changed traffic conditions or directions,” Councillor Burnett said.
From Tuesday 6 July, work will start at Sandpiper Avenue, from Lorikeet Avenue to Cockatoo Drive, between the hours of 8am-4pm.
Construction here is due to be completed by 26 August 2021.
The following New Auckland addresses will have water interruptions on 6 July:
- 15 – 66 Sandpiper Avenue, New Auckland
- 4 – 17 Gannet Street, New Auckland
- 3 – 6 Goshawk Street, New Auckland
- 15a – 54 Cockatoo Drive, New Auckland
- 1 – 30 Harrier Avenue, New Auckland
- 1 – 33 Curlew Drive, New Auckland
- 3 – 5 Skua Street, New Auckland.
Cr Burnett said Council had advised residents and business owners in the impacted areas of the forthcoming works program and additional letters will go out closer to work starting in each of the three locations, as a reminder.
The next renewal work will occur on Aerodrome Road, from J. Hickey Avenue to Clarke Street, on 18 August 2021 with an expected completion date of 20 December 2021.
Work on replacing the water main In Auckland Street, from Tank Street to Short Street, will begin on 26 November 2021 and is due to be completed by 14 February 2022.
Cr Burnett said to help with construction of the new mains, temporary above ground water lines would need to be installed to feed properties currently connected to the section of the main to be replaced.
“The watermains are located across private property driveways and pipe ramps will be used to protect the pipeline where it crosses residential driveways and roadways,” he said.
Work will also include some horizontal directional drilling at certain locations which will generate noise during daytime work hours.
Once the existing water main is removed and the new one installed, it will be connected to the existing network and houses.
During the switch over to the new water main system, water to houses and businesses will need to be shut off.
