National NAIDOC Week celebrations begin on Sunday
NAIDOC Week is usually held in July each year to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
The Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) prompted the National NAIDOC Committee to postpone the festivities earlier this year in the interest of safety for all communities.
Gladstone Region Mayor Matt Burnett said Council would always be committed to the event, which runs from Sunday 8 November to Sunday 15 November this year.
“The theme of this year’s NAIDOC Week is ‘Always Was, Always Will Be’,” Councillor Burnett said.
“Gladstone's NAIDOC committee will be hosting a Family Day and Expo at Barney Point Park on Thursday, 12 November from 10am to 4pm, and I encourage people to go along and join in the festivities on the day.”
Cr Burnett also reiterated Council’s commitment to the reconciliation message as it prepared to progress the next stage of its Reconciliation Action Program (RAP).
The Gladstone Regional Art Gallery & Museum (GRAGM) will recognise the week by highlighting a First Nation’s cultural collection of items including drawings, prints, paintings, 3D digital works and engaging stories.
This exhibition, to be held in the gallery’s Museum Room, will be open during NAIDOC Week and then for an extended period over the festive season.
