Stage 1 of Calliope Cemetery upgrade has now been completed
Work is now complete on the first of two stages to upgrade Calliope Cemetery, following the installation of 200 metres of fencing.
Installed along the western boundary of the cemetery adjacent to Herbertson Road, the fencing has added to the overall aesthetics and safety of the facility.
Gladstone Region Councillor Natalia Muszkat said with Stage 1 of the Calliope Cemetery upgrade now complete, attention will turn to Stage 2 of the project.
“Further work will take place at the cemetery in October and November with 64 Modern Burial Systems (MBS) crypts set to be installed within the south-east platform of the cemetery,” Councillor Muszkat said.
“The MBS offers greater land utilisation, a safe environment for employees and visitors to the Cemetery, no excavation disturbance and the ability for burials to take place in areas where the traditional burial process is difficult or impossible.”
The MBS comprises of a series of underground concrete crypts made from a prefabricated geopolymer, with grassed grown over the area.
The earliest recorded burial at Calliope Cemetery can be traced back to 1884.
