Gladstone Region welcomes 111 new citizens at citizenship ceremony
The Gladstone Region welcomed 111 new citizens at an Australian citizenship ceremony on Wednesday 22 September as part of Australian Citizenship Day celebrations.
The 111 new citizens from 30 countries, including United Kingdom, Bangladesh, Egypt, Finland, Jamaica, Iran, Mozambique, Sri Lanka, Iraq, Ireland and France, to name a few, became Australian citizens as part of a ceremony at Gladstone Entertainment Convention Centre.
Gladstone Region Mayor Matt Burnett said Australian Citizenship Day was an opportunity for all Australians in their community, whether by birth or by choice, to reflect on and celebrate what’s great about being Australian.
“Australian Citizenship Day provides an occasion for individuals, schools, community groups and organisations to reflect on the contributions of citizens to our local communities,” Councillor Burnett said.
“COVID-19 restrictions in many parts of the country will result in fewer citizenship ceremonies than usual this year, but here in the Gladstone Region we were still able to mark this important occasion and welcome new Australians to our community.”
Cr Burnett said that even with lockdowns across the country, it’s anticipated that more than 140 ceremonies will take place by local councils and community groups across Australia, with more than 7000 people invited to become new citizens.
