Increased capacity at Calliope Cemetery following completion of crypt installation
Upgrades to Calliope Cemetery were completed late last year following the installation of 61 Modern Burial System (MBS) Crypts.
Beginning in June 2020, work was completed in stages with the first stage involving the installation of a 200m perimeter fence along the western boundary adjacent to Herbertson Road.
Following the completion of that work in July, Stage 2 works were undertaken in November and December to install 61 MBS Crypts on the southeast corner of the lawn section.
Comprising of a series of underground concrete crypts large enough to fit two traditional coffins, the MBS plots are covered by a concrete lid and lawn overlay which can be easily removed when the plot is needed.
Gladstone Region Councillor Desley O’Grady said MBS Crypts provide a space-efficient, environmentally friendly solution with increased safety of Council employees and visitors.
“The system alleviates the need of excavation disturbance as a lid-lifting machine lifts the grass, soil, crypt lid and headstone prior to a burial,” Councillor O’Grady said.
