Seventeen Seventy Sewer Rising Main Replacement
Works to relocate and replace 1000m of existing sewer rising main along Captain Cook Drive at Seventeen Seventy will occur from early December 2024 to June 2025, site conditions and weather permitting.
This extensive Capital Works project will occur in stages, in varying parts of the road corridor, with works starting near Endeavour Park and finishing near the Seventeen Seventy boat ramp around June 2025.
This work is extremely critical to provide an efficient sewer network infrastructure capable of servicing the community and visitors to the region for years to come.
The Frequently Asked Questions below aim to help answer community questions about this project.
These will be added to and updated as the project progresses.
Frequently Asked Question
A. With considerations to minimise disruptions, Council has been working closely with the Contractor to develop a draft work program.
Anticipated planned work forecast, site conditions and weather permitting:
- From 20 Dec: Stop for Christmas period
- 6 Jan 2025: Recommence works on-site
- 6 Jan to mid-late Jan: Pump station upgrade works
- From mid-late Jan to end Mar 2025: Start of sewer rising main realignment works within the road corridor to be undertaken section-by-section - work to start from carpark area in Endeavour Park. Works within the road corridor are expected to be completed by the end of March.
- From end March to end June 2025: Connections, testing, reinstatement work and resurfacing with intermittent disruptions within the road corridor expected.
The above dates are a guide. Due to the nature of construction projects and unforeseen delays, works and timeframes may vary.
A. New alignment of the sewer rising main will prevent risks of uncontrolled sewer release to the immediate environment, supporting objectives of Council’s Our Coast Our Future Coastal Hazard Adaption Strategy to ensure appropriate adaptation responses to help avoid, mitigate, and manage the risk of coastal hazards.
A. To date, there has been considerable time and effort on design and preliminary project requirements undertaken in preparation for these works.
Council has been working with the Contractor to develop a draft work program to minimise community disruptions where possible.
A. This work is extremely critical to provide an efficient sewer network infrastructure capable of servicing the community and visitors to the region for years to come.
The existing pipeline, if not realigned and replaced, could pose potential public safety hazards and environmental damage. If not replaced, in the event of further coastal erosion, deteriorating pipework could fail, increase remediation costs, potentially lead to lengthy, unplanned sewer network outages and possibly result in uncontrolled sewage discharge to the immediate environment.
A. The Seventeen Seventy Sewer Rising Main Replacement project is funded by the Queensland Government’s QCoast2100 program and Gladstone Regional Council.
Council was one of 10 Queensland coastal councils successful in receiving the Queensland Government’s QCoast2100 funding to assist relocation of critical infrastructure.
This allows infrastructure improvement for our region with the work to be supported by external funding, instead of being solely dependent on ratepayer dollars.
Funding eligibility requires Council to adhere to strict deadlines for completion of the works.
A. When scheduling project works across our region, strong consideration is given to project timeframes and efforts to minimise impacts on tourism.
While it would be ideal if works could be scheduled to avoid busy tourism times, in this circumstance, extensive works are required for this project and unavoidably this work will take considerable time to complete.
This project involves improvements to nearly half of the existing sewer rising main pipeline along Captain Cook Drive with replacement/realignment work forecast to take about seven to eight months from start to finish, site conditions and weather permitting.
Funding eligibility requires Council to adhere to strict deadlines for completion of the works.
A. Council has been working closely with the Contractor for these works and has taken on board feedback from nearby business operators to establish a draft work program aimed to minimise disruptions where practical.
- There will be no works within the road corridor prior to Christmas.
- Only minor works on the pump station and generator will be completed in the December period.
From mid-January, to further minimise disruptions, works will be carried out in stages, section-by-section. Within the staged work area, during the construction period, there will be some disruption throughout the day.
