Protect our Rainbow bee-eaters
Rainbow bee-eaters are common across the Gladstone Region and breeding colonies may be encountered in open, grassed areas, particularly in sandy soil which is easy to excavate for burrows.
Did you know that the Rainbow Bee-eater is the only species of bee-eater in Australia?
These ground-nesting rainbow feathered friends visit our beautiful region every August to breed and nest in burrows up to 1m deep.
Being on the ground, they aren't well adapted to protecting their nests from introduced animals like cane toads and their nests are also in danger of being trampled or flooded.
The 1770 SES Grounds supports a large colony where over 200 nests have been recorded in a season.
Please note that the grounds are a dogs on leash area from August to January each year.
