Help preserve an iconic Queenslander at Agnes Water tree planting event
Gladstone Regional Council is inviting the residents of Agnes Water, Seventeen Seventy and surrounding communities to participate in pandanus tree planting event on Saturday 6 May.
Pandanus (andanus tectorius) is an iconic species growing on coastal dunes and headlands from north Queensland to New South Wales.
However, pandanus trees in parts of Queensland and New South Wales have been suffering from dieback since the 1990s due to a condition mainly caused by infestations of the pandanus leafhopper (Jamella australiae).
Gladstone Region Mayor Matt Burnett said pandanus dieback is best mitigated using a combination of different management techniques.
“Direct seeding and revegetation play an important role in expanding or reinstating populations of pandanus in areas affected by dieback,” Councillor Burnett said.
“That’s why Council is doing its bit to boost the pandanus population by hosting a community education and planting event in Agnes Water.
“We’re encouraging the community to come along and help preserve local pandanus trees by planting new pandanus plants and sowing seeds.”
The free planting event will also include a community education session with pandanus dieback specialist Joel Fostin sharing his insights about pandanus dieback.
