Mosquito Management Plan protects community
Council’s Mosquito Management Plan highlights the importance of keeping mosquitoes at bay to protect the community from mosquito-borne diseases throughout the entire year.
Wet weather can see a rise in mosquito numbers impacting residents and Council works hard to ensure numbers are kept at a minimum across the region through environmentally friendly mosquito management measures as well as community education.
Gladstone Region Councillor Rick Hansen said mosquitoes are part of our natural environment and can breed in both fresh and saltwater, so we cannot eradicate them completely, but everyone can take precautions to protect themselves from being bitten.
“There are many things people can do to protect themselves and their homes from mosquitoes,” Councillor Hansen said.
“Removing any stagnant water from around the house and yard, keeping roof gutters clear from blockages, screening rainwater tanks and keeping swimming pools maintained are just a few ways to help reduce breeding in your own backyard.
“Managing the mosquito population in the Gladstone Region is a priority for Council year-round and particularly from October to May where there can be an increase in the major breeding sites due to the wet season.”
