Upcoming footpath works to fill in a missing link in Gladstone CBD
Gladstone Regional Council has been successful in securing funding to construct a footpath that, once completed, will link to other existing footpaths located within Gladstone’s CBD.
These footpath works are part of the Gladstone CBD – Walking Network Plan and Priority Works Project which is a pilot project funded by the State Government under the Queensland Walking Strategy 2019-2029.
The works involve construction of a 130m footpath from the corner of Glenlyon and Tank Streets through to an existing footpath in Apex Park.
Construction will start from this week and is expected to be completed by 22 May 2021.
The Tank Street footpath is one of two set for construction under the $150,000 funding arrangement, with works at the Lord Street and Goondoon Street intersection scheduled for later this month.
Gladstone Region Councillor Chris Cameron said the upcoming works would result in temporary changes to pedestrian and traffic conditions.
“The main difference pedestrians and motorists will notice during the duration of these works will be the closure of the slip lane from Glenlyon Street into Tank Street,” Councillor Cameron said.
“This will prevent traffic from turning left from Glenlyon Street into Tank Street, but only for a brief period.
“Motorists are urged to drive carefully near the works area and adhere to the changed traffic conditions and directions.”
Works will be carried out between 6am and 6pm, Monday to Saturday.
Cr Cameron said the construction of the new footpath would lead to a noticeable improvement for pedestrians.
“This pathway will fill a missing link and improve crossing facilities thereby making it easier and safer for pedestrians to navigate the intersection at Tank and Glenlyon Streets,” he said.
Member for Gladstone Glenn Butcher said the Queensland Government was leading by example by collaborating with local government to make walking an obvious and healthy choice for all Queenslanders.
"The State Government is investing $2.5 million over three years to deliver infrastructure and programs encouraging more people to walk, whether it be for recreation, commuting, fitness or socialising,” Mr Butcher said.
"Money invested in well-planned infrastructure for people walking pays for itself in physical and mental health benefits, reduced traffic congestion, economic development and socially connected communities."
