Driveways
Your driveway, your responsibility - Council does scheduled maintenance of rural sealed and unsealed roads however this doesn't include individual driveways/access to private land.
Your driveway includes the area from your property boundary to the edge of the road
Can I maintain or repair my driveway?
You can maintain or repair an existing driveway “like for like” without a licence or approval.
Can I build a new driveway or change a driveway?
If you are constructing or modifying your own driveway, you must obtain an approval.
When designing and building a driveway, there are important safety requirements about width and length of the driveway, viewing distances, distances from intersections, power poles, street signs and trees.
Can I have two driveways on my property?
Generally, only one driveway is permitted for each property. Two driveways can be considered for properties that have a street frontage greater than 30 metres. An approval is required and driveways need to meet the safety requirements.
What if there is a tree or electricity pole where I want to put my driveway?
You need to plan the location of your driveway so that it is clear of any trees, pipes or electricity lines. Significant trees, traffic islands and stormwater pits cannot be moved to suit driveways! The cost of any remedial works will be at the property owner’s expense.
For any activities within the road reserve, where physical excavation or any disturbance of the ground is to occur within the drip line of existing street trees, please consult with Council prior to work commencing.
What are the key requirements?
These safety requirements are contained in the documents below. A Building Certifier can help you to understand what is needed on your particular block of land:
Checklist - Driveways
This checklist helps you manage the steps to obtain an approval to construct or modify a driveway to your property.

Prior to starting this process, it is recommended to seek out an understanding of costs and timing from a Builder as well as a Building Certifier. You may also need a Registered Professional Engineer of Queensland (RPEQ).
☑ Builder
☐ If you are building or modifying an existing driveway crossover comply with the standard drawing requirements you will require a permit only.
☐ If you have a design that is different to Council’s standard drawing for driveway. The alternative design is required to be signed off by a Registered Professional Engineer of Queensland.
☐ To check if property is located on a state controlled road please visit the Queensland Government’s Development Assessment Mapping System and search for your property’s address using the search bar.
Once you have located your property, go to the left side bar and select SARA DA Mapping:
> State transport
> State transport
> State transport corridor
> State controlled road.
This will identify any State Controlled Roads adjacent to your site.
☐ Development Services - Application to Construct (and Maintain) a Driveway (Vehicle Crossover) form.
☐ Site plan showing the location of the driveway.
☐ The property owner must contact Before You Dig Australia on 1100 to ensure the proposed driveway location is free from underground services.
☐ Prior to pouring concrete you must book an inspection with Council to obtain approval to commence works.
☐ Assessment fee as per Council’s Fees and charges.
Applications should be made a minimum of 10 business days prior to the commencement date of works. The proposed driveway works must not commence until a permit is received from Council.
☐ Applications can be submitted and paid for using Council's Online Development Application Portal.
Once you have the required approval, you can work with the Builder and RPEQ Engineer if required to progress your project.
A driveway permit is valid for 12 months from the date of issue. Once construction has started, the driveway must be completed within 10 working days.
