Upgraded water meters to be installed at thousands of properties
Gladstone Regional Council’s rollout of advanced water meter infrastructure has entered its third stage with thousands of meters to be installed across the region during the coming months.
Stage 3 of the project will see upgraded infrastructure installed at 5000 residential and commercial properties in Clinton, Calliope, Mount Larcom and parts of Kirkwood from February to June.
Gladstone Region Mayor Matt Burnett said advanced water meters can detect leaks that often go unnoticed.
“Readings from individual meters can be used to identify possible water leaks that property owners may not notice for months or even years,” Councillor Burnett said.
“Having these meters installed can potentially help residents save money on wasted water and help communities make better use of their water resources.
“The meters also produce more accurate reading data without having to physically read the meter for billing purposes.”
In 2023, advanced water meter infrastructure was installed at 1300 residential and commercial properties in Miriam Vale, Bororen, Seventeen Seventy and Agnes Water (Stage 1).
Stage 2 of the multi-year project took place last year and saw 542 meters installed in Beecher and Burua.
Cr Burnett said the age of a property’s existing water meter will determine if it is fully replaced with a new advanced water meter, or if the existing meter can be retained and an advanced water meter sensor added to the existing unit.
“Information available from advanced meters will provide data to Council and users who sign up to the My Water portal to help identify any hidden leaks on properties,” he said.
“The portal can be accessed anytime for near real-time data while users can customise their portal so that if usage exceeds a certain volume, an automatic notification is triggered.
“There is no cost to property owners associated with meter upgrade, which takes about 15 minutes with little disruption to water supply.”
