National Tree Day is a great reason to get outside this weekend
As part of GRC's commitment to creating positive environmental change, Council will once again take part in National Tree Day, Australia's largest community tree planting and nature protection event.
More than 26 million trees have been planted each year since National Tree Day was founded by Planet Ark and Olivia Newton-John in 1996.
National Tree Day comprises of two separate days – Schools Tree Day (Friday 30 July) and National Tree Day (Sunday 1 August) – offering school children and residents a chance to make a difference.
Schools will be able to register their interest in a National Tree Day Plant Pack for collection from the Tondoon Botanic Gardens.
Gladstone Region Councillor Darryl Branthwaite said National Tree Day provides an opportunity to educate our community on conservation while enhancing biodiversity of local areas.
“This year’s location for National Tree Day will be Cashin Park at Tannum Sands,” Councillor Branthwaite said.
“The planting site will be prepared by Council in advance by ripping the soil, mulching and preparing a whopping 250 plants to be planted.”
Cr Branthwaite said as part of this year’s National Tree Day activities, Council is inviting our community to share their thoughts and experiences on our planting initiatives and to also provide suggestions for future events.
A photo competition will also take place with entries closing at 5pm on Sunday 22 August ahead of a three-week voting period opening from Monday 23 August.
“The easiest way to participate is by visiting Council’s online Conversations platform where you’ll find a feedback survey on Council’s tree planting initiatives, the ability to RSVP to the National Tree Day event on 1 August and details on how to enter the photo competition,” he said.
“I encourage those interested in the photo competition to read the terms and conditions of entry as we are looking for a photograph representing what National Tree Day means to the photographer, such as planting a tree or even hugging a tree.”
“There will be a category for over 18s and under 18s, who can win a $330 photo shoot at Tondoon Botanic Gardens or a $150 Australian Geographic voucher, respectively.
“The photo that receives the most likes on the Conversations platform will be declared the winner in their category.”
