Council secures funding for Harbour Arbour project
Gladstone Regional Council has successfully secured $5.3 million funding from the Federal Government to progress its Harbour Arbour project in the Gladstone city centre.
Gladstone Region Mayor Matt Burnett said Council was excited to receive this funding as Council has a clear vision to transform the harbour end of Gladstone’s main street into a vibrant tree-lined boulevard.
“The project will redevelop the streetscape of Goondoon Street between Lord and Yarroon Streets and provide an innovative, unique and sustainable Harbour Arbour that provides a safe and shady pedestrian linkage from the harbour to the CBD,” Councillor Burnett said.
“This will be a fantastic activator of economic activity, generating benefits for retail, business, hospitality, entertainment and tourism for the region as it provides an inviting pathway for future cruise ship passengers to explore the CBD area beyond East Shores.”
The Harbour Arbour – East Shores to City Heart Activation Project is one of Council’s 2024/25 Strategic Priorities and welcomes $5,330,404 in funding under the Growing Regions Program – Round 2 – which drives regional economic prosperity by providing access to funding for communityfocused infrastructure projects throughout rural and regional areas of Australia.
Project benefits:
- Re-establish Goondoon Street as Gladstone’s main street by improving economic and development opportunities within the Central Business District (CBD)
- Create a unique identity for the CBD achieving a sense of arrival
- Recognise the city’s heritage as an important asset and improve the quality of public spaces and streets
- Create a CBD destination that provides entertainment for the entire Gladstone Region
- Investigate alternative transport options for ease of access into and throughout the CBD
- Convert grey space to green space and improve connectivity to activate open spaces.
