Mount Larcom Swimming Pool to reopen following maintenance works
Gladstone Regional Council is pleased to advise that the Mount Larcom Swimming Pool will reopen for community use in December 2023.
This follows Council’s August 2023 announcement to residents and pool patrons that a temporary solution has been achieved allowing Mount Larcom Swimming Pool to remain open while designs are prepared for a replacement.
Mount Larcom Swimming Pool is a 25m, six-lane pool built in 1971 and given the typical lifespan of a pool shell is 50 years, it has now reached its end-of-life.
Gladstone Region Mayor Matt Burnett said Mount Larcom Swimming Pool is a highly valued asset for the Mount Larcom community and associated user groups.
“The Mount Larcom Swimming Pool has been a central part of the community for more than 50 years and residents and local schools have expressed their desire to retain an aquatic facility into the future,” Councillor Burnett said.
“We have listened to the community and have made the decision to enact a temporary solution that will allow the pool to reopen in December 2023.
"This work will involve the replacement of filtration systems, chemical dosing plants, several tanks, electrical upgrades, painting and replacement of damaged fencing.
“These works will allow the pool to align with current national standards and health guidelines.”
Cr Burnett said a community meeting will be held on 21 October to seek feedback on the proposed construction of a new pool.
"Council will provide our latest update on the work to reopen the facility to a safe, acceptable community standard,” he said.
“Feedback is keenly sought to ensure a proposed replacement facility would appropriately meet the community’s current and future needs.”
Once reopened, Mount Larcom Swimming Pool will remain open until 31 March 2024, as per its usual seasonal operating model (1 September to 31 March).
