Official opening date set for four new GRAGM exhibitions
Gladstone Regional Art Gallery & Museum (GRAGM) is inviting the public to attend the official opening of four new exhibitions on Friday 19 August.
Beginning from 6pm, attendees can view The 28th Golding Showcase: Port Curtis Callide Valley Youth Art Exhibition and certificate presentation, Sacrifice by William Debois, Intercity Images Combined Exhibition a combined display of photographs from the Gladstone Region and Saiki, Japan, and our newest social history exhibition Larcom Lodge Anniversary Exhibition.
The 28th Golding Showcase: Port Curtis Callide Valley Youth Art Exhibition is an annual display and initiative of the Gladstone Regional Art Gallery and Museum Society, supported by the late society patron, Mr Cyril Golding (1920–2012).
Gladstone Region Mayor Matt Burnett said this exhibition is proudly local.
“The exhibition offers young artists aged 15-18 years the unique opportunity to display their artwork in a professional gallery space,” Councillor Burnett said.
“Visitors are invited to vote for their favourite artwork and the selected work is featured on promotional material the following year.
“Ali Dinte won the Golding Showcase People's Choice Winner in 2021 with her work Lucky Country.”
Cr Burnett added that each year a local secondary school is invited to GRAGM to assist with the installation of the exhibition and opening event, with Tannum Sands State High chosen in 2022.
Sacrifice by William Debois brings together portrait photography and oral histories into a body of work that highlights contemporary social issues through personal and often powerful stories. Collected in various regional and metropolitan locations since January 2021, these portraits and stories are the results of collaborations between the photographer and the sitters, whose contribution begins with a response to the two questions: What does sacrifice mean to you? What sacrifices have you made?
“William’s creative process took shape during a road trip from Melbourne to Gladstone, where he captured dozens of people met by chance, via recommendation and occasionally after pursuing them with persistence,” Cr Burnett said.
The 28th Golding Showcase: Port Curtis Callide Valley Youth Art Exhibition and Sacrifice by William Debois are on display until 1 October 2022.
Intercity Images Combined Exhibition 2022 will be on display until 3 September in GRAGM’s Front Gallery and will feature a joint display of Japanese and Australian photographs by Saiki City and Gladstone Region residents.
Now in its 20th year, Intercity Images is a Gladstone Saiki Sister City Advisory Committee initiative, supported by Gladstone Regional Council.
Larcom Lodge Anniversary Exhibition is also on display until 3 September and celebrates the 100- year anniversary of the Mount Larcom Lodge (Larcom Masonic Lodge), using objects donated by the Lodge to the Gallery & Museum Social History Collection.
