Stage 2 works assist in modernising the Gladstone Aquatic Centre
Stage 2 of the Gladstone Aquatic Centre Rejuvenation Project is nearing completion with patrons expected to see some modern additions upon their next visit.
Commencing in September 2021, Stage 2 works focussed on an upgrade to the main amenities building, including Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) accessible facilities and family change rooms, new roof structures over the main amenities, a new awning to the existing kiosk and an upgrade to the facility’s front entrance.
An alternative entrance has been set up via the northern or 25m pool access while works are undertaken to the front entrance.
Gladstone Region Councillor Darryl Branthwaite said that once all stages are completed, the finished product would deliver a new and improved facility for the region.
“The Gladstone Aquatic Centre has undergone several upgrades since the original 50m pool was constructed in 1975, including the addition of the 25m pool, known as the Sister Elizabeth Kenny Memorial Pool, that was officially opened in September 1989,” Councillor Branthwaite said.
“It’s fantastic that we’ve been able to receive funding support from both the State and Australian Governments to undertake these upgrades.
“This is another example of all three levels of government working together to deliver a facility that will benefit people for many more years to come.”
The Australian Government’s Local Roads and Community Infrastructure (LRCI) Program contributed $1.626 million towards the $1.951 million Stage 2 works, with Council funding the difference.
The LRCI Program supports local Councils to deliver priority local road and community infrastructure projects across Australia, supporting jobs and the resilience of local economies to help communities bounce back from the COVID-19 pandemic. T
he third stage of the Gladstone Aquatic Centre Rejuvenation Project has received $2.4m of State Government funding through the 2021-24 Works for Queensland Program.
This stage will involve upgrades to the 25m and 50m pools including pool tile replacement for the 25m pool, heating upgrade for the 25m pool and renewal of the 25m pool building enclosure.
The grandstand and shade sails near the 50m pool will also be upgraded as part of the Stage 3 works. The above works have caused a temporary closure of the 25m pool.
However, temporary heating of the 50m pool and temporary shade structure covering the shallow end of the 50m pool have been installed while work on the 25m pool is undertaken.
This will ensure the comfort of patrons and the continued use of the pool during the cooler months.
