Gladstone Region Acting Mayor Chris Trevor said the review formed part of Council’s overall commitment to improving its processes for reduction of waste.

“This review was also conducted in conjunction with the Queensland Government, as part of the introduction of the waste levy,” Councillor Trevor said.

During the 2019/20 financial year, Council will move to a full cost recovery model for commercial operators.

“Council has commenced a waste strategy review, which includes reviewing potential future development of waste to energy,” Cr Trevor said.

“Through working towards extending the life of each landfill and by diverting more waste from the landfill to other uses, Council endeavours to reduce the overall costs of the landfill.”

Under the new operational costs, commercial operators would have fees from both Council and the Queensland Government (through the waste levy).

“Businesses are encouraged to look at how they can reduce waste, separate waste streams and recycle more to help reduce waste disposal costs,” Cr Trevor said.

Domestic users will only experience an increase to waste bin charges due to costs associated with meeting the requirements for running the landfill and transfer stations.
