Mayor to take leave of absence during Federal Election campaign
Matt Burnett has today announced he will take a leave of absence from his civic duties as Mayor of the Gladstone Region, effective from Monday, 18 April 2022.
Councillor Burnett will fulfil his Mayoral duties throughout the Easter in Gladstone period, continuing Council’s long-standing traditions around the iconic Brisbane to Gladstone Yacht Race.
Deputy Mayor Kahn Goodluck will be Acting Mayor during the campaign period. In April 2021, the Australian Labor Party announced Matt Burnett as their candidate for the Electorate of Flynn (Queensland) for the upcoming election.
Since Cr Matt Burnett’s candidacy was announced, he has maintained his civic responsibilities as Gladstone Region Mayor and continued to have the region front of mind. He also carried out his responsibilities as Vice President of the Australian Local Government Association (ALGA) and as a Director of the Local Government Association of Queensland (LGAQ), and Policy Executive Member for Central Queensland.
Cr Burnett was first elected to Gladstone City Council in 2000, became Deputy Mayor of Gladstone Regional Council in 2011 and has held the position of Mayor since 2016.
Gladstone Regional Council will not be making any further comment at this time.
