Boardwalk and deck replacement to provide better access at Gardens
One of Australia’s top regional gardens will undergo a makeover during the coming months with the replacement of the café timber deck and boardwalk at Gladstone Tondoon Botanic Gardens.
The project will provide a new and aesthetically pleasing deck to support the café and events held at the gardens.
The new deck and boardwalk will be similar in size to the existing structures; however, the new structures will include durable and modern fibre cement decking that will provide a stylish and clean look without the risk of damage from the elements.
The works will run from 4 November 2020 until March 2021 (weather permitting).
Gladstone Region Mayor Matt Burnett said once completed, the new deck and boardwalk will once again provide safe access and seating as it had in the past.
“The deck replacement work will also coincide with the opportunity for local businesses to tender for the recently vacated Gardens café lease,” Councillor Burnett said.
“Following completion of the works, Council will tender for an occupant to operate the café.”
Cr Burnett spoke of the changes that regular users at the Gardens would expect to see during the works.
“One of the car parking areas will be closed to the public during construction, with traffic management and signage in place to assist traffic,” he said.
“Pedestrian safety is also considered meaning access to the deck will be fenced off during this period as well.”
Cr Burnett said the Rotary Charity Markets will not be affected by the works and will go ahead as per normal on the third Sunday of each month from 7am, following COVID-19 guidelines.
“Car parking for market attendees will be outside of the Tondoon Botanic Garden grounds, utilising the main carpark and large grassed area off Bailiff Road,” he said.
"Gladstone company Young’s Building Contractors will undertake the $460,000 project, fully funded under the 2019-21 Works for Queensland program.”
The Tondoon Botanic Gardens Café Deck Replacement Project is an initiative of the Queensland Government.
Gladstone Tondoon Botanic Gardens was named as one of Australia’s top ten regional gardens by Australian Geographic in 2018.
