One of several Gladstone Regional Council facilities to benefit from $5.2 million in funding from the Queensland Government’s COVID Works for Queensland program.

Gladstone Region Mayor Matt Burnett said thanks to this program, residents located across all corners of the Gladstone Region would benefit from nine projects this financial year, these include:

• Gladstone Aquatic Centre rejuvenation and upgrade ($1.3m)
• Floor replacement at Boyne Tannum Community Centre ($279,000)
• Veranda renewal and repair at Castletower community building ($200,000)
• Safety and building improvements at Gladstone Entertainment Convention Centre ($150,000)
• Upgrade to Cassy Lives Skate Park, Gladstone ($325,000)
• Playground replacement program across the region ($427,200)
• A second weighbridge at Benaraby Landfill ($400,000)
• Gladstone Waste Water Treatment Plant stormwater mitigation ($380,500)
• Pump station renewal ($1.8m).

“Money from the Queensland Government’s COVID Works for Queensland program will assist Council in delivering upgrades to community facilities and essential infrastructure,” Councillor Burnett said.

“This is money going straight to Council, allowing us to deliver shovel-ready projects while reducing costs on ratepayers.

“These projects help make a real difference in our community and I’d like to thank the Queensland Government for their ongoing assistance.

“The Works for Queensland program is one of the greatest programs I’ve seen delivered by a State Government.”

Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said the COVID Works for Queensland program will assist in getting people back to work as quickly as possible as Queensland unites and recovers from COVID-19.

“The COVID Works for Queensland program is the best way to get people into jobs quickly and efficiently,” Ms Palaszczuk said.

“This is about the Queensland Government giving money to councils to get people into work, meaning it’s a win for councils and a win for local people.

“There’s not a mayor in regional Queensland who hasn’t told me how successful this program is.”

Member for Gladstone Glenn Butcher said the projects were part of Queensland’s road to economic recovery and would make a difference to the region.

“I am very pleased that projects like the Aquatic Centre upgrade and new playground equipment across the region will be funded through this fantastic initiative,” he said.

“While there’s no doubt our people are resilient, I know these projects, and the jobs they create, will be extremely welcome during this tough time.”
