Red benches raise awareness about domestic violence
Gladstone Regional Council is supporting a national initiative to raise awareness about the
problem of domestic and family violence, through the simple act of painting two park benches bright red.
The benches, which were recently unveiled, are at Gladstone’s Kooyong Park and the Air Sea Rescue Park in Seventeen Seventy.
Gladstone Region Councillor Desley O’Grady said Council had joined the Red Rose Foundation’s Red Bench Project to have permanent reminders that domestic violence occurs in all communities.
“The simple act of painting a park bench bright red is designed to make people stop and think about this important issue,” Councillor O’Grady said.
“Having the red benches in a public area raises awareness and allows the issue to remain visible.
“Our two red benches join over 40 across Australia and feature a plaque as a further reminder that we can change the ending to domestic violence.”
