Marley Brown Oval to host Queensland Reds in aid of local farmers
The Gladstone Region is continuing to position itself as the premier location for top-level sporting events and competition in CQ with the announcement of a Super Rugby preseason match taking place.
The Queensland Reds will play Melbourne Rebels at Gladstone Coal Exporters Sports Complex (Marley Brown Oval) on Friday, 17 January 2020 with the match kicking off at 4.30pm.
Gladstone Regional Council yesterday, at its general meeting, endorsed hosting the match, while also passing a motion to allocate revenue acquired from the match to the Gladstone Region Drought Appeal.
The Gladstone Region Drought Appeal was launched last week in an effort to provide much needed support to the region's primary producers.
Gladstone Region Mayor Matt Burnett anticipates the event will result in a high economic return during a traditionally low period in the region.
“This announcement comes off the back of Gladstone Regional Council’s continued effort to attract high-profile sporting teams to the region,” Councillor Burnett said.
“I’m also pleased to announce revenue from ticket sales will be donated to local farmers through the Gladstone Region Drought Appeal.
“I encourage residents to support our local farmers and the Queensland Reds by purchasing a ticket to the game.
“Council is determined to keep bringing the big games and events to Marley Brown Oval following the positive feedback received from the National Rugby Championship played in September.”
