A wide variety of opportunities exist for the 2024 intake and all roles include on-the-job training and support that will develop employability skills, knowledge and experience.

Gladstone Region Mayor Matt Burnett said applications are open until Friday 15 September.

“We have many success stories from this program and by simply submitting your application you could potentially carve out a long and rewarding career at Council,” Cr Burnett said.

One of those success stories is Jakob Humphries, 21, who began his journey with Council as a Business Administration Trainee in March 2019 with the People Services team.

Since then, Jakob has held a further five roles, including an acting team leader position and is currently the Executive Assistant to the General Manager of Community and Lifestyle, Kylie Lee.

“The experience I have gained through holding numerous roles and higher duties has allowed me to settle into my role very quickly,” Jakob said.

“The knowledge learnt from these roles allows me to succeed in my current role as an Executive Assistant with oversight across the entire Community and Lifestyle business unit.

“I feel so privileged to have been supported by my leaders with my career aspirations.”

While Jakob’s current role keeps him busy, the Chanel College graduate is also Deputy Chairperson of the Gladstone Region Youth Council.

He also keeps himself busy as a Youth Representative on the Philip Street Precinct Advisory Committee and has lofty career ambitions.

“I am still forging along my career path, with my sights firmly set on becoming the Chief Executive Officer of a local government area,” Jakob said.

“The best advice I can give to those who are applying for an apprenticeship or traineeship is to research Council and understand the services it provides to our community.”
