Take yourself on a journey back in time
An idea that spawned from a town makeover has now become a reality for the Mount Larcom District Progress Association.
The Mt Larcom Heritage Walk, an initiative of the Progress Association, is a short self-guided walk that takes people to nine points of interest within the town.
Each point of interest is accompanied by a historical photograph and interesting facts about that site, with many of the landmarks featured on the trail dating back more than a century.
Mount Larcom District Progress Association secretary Cheryl Hannant said the idea for the trail came from the 7-Day Makeover program that took place in April 2017.
“We did a bit of a facelift of the whole town, the bus shelter and various things, and then we thought why don’t we put some photos and information at each location because there’s lots of old buildings that are still here,” Cheryl said.
“We wanted to record those old photos that had been gathered from around the place… some of our older people have gone now but we have their photos electronic.
“It’s about paying respect to those settlers because they would have had it pretty tough, so this is a way to remember what they did.”
Stops along the trail include Mt Larcom Café, CBC Bank, E&J Collins store site, McDonnell & East store, Butcher and Bank of New South Wales, Newsagent and General Store, Royal Hotel, Lower section of Raglan Street and Mount Larcom Railway Station.
The trail is numbered with many of the landmarks located on Raglan Street, but it can be walked in any order and is also wheelchair accessible.
Cheryl said the Mount Larcom District Progress Association were pleased to see the trail come to life.
“We’re quite thankful to the Council for providing the funding and installing them, and I must mention Judy Tully, our president, who has been instrumental in a lot of this.
“Hopefully people will now spend a little bit more time in Mount Larcom.”
