Applications open for newly created First Nations Fire Officer role
Gladstone Regional Council is seeking a suitably qualified First Nations Fire Officer to support our commitment to bushfire mitigation and land management utilising First Nations techniques.
This role has been made possible through funding from the Australian Government’s Black Summer Bushfire Recovery Grants Program and supports the employment of a First Nations Fire Officer and implementation of a cultural burn and land management program up until March 2024.
Gladstone Region Acting Mayor Kahn Goodluck said the successful candidate must identify as First Nations, with preference given to those who identify as one of the four local Traditional Owner groups – Bailai, Gurang, Gooreng Gooreng or Taribelang Bunda.
“This unique role will establish cultural burning practices throughout the region to ensure improved environment and cultural outcomes,” Councillor Goodluck said.
“This is a very exciting opportunity for a First Nations person with previous experience and relevant qualifications.”
Cr Goodluck is encouraging anyone interested in the role to attend an upcoming information session on Tuesday 31 May or Thursday 2 June from 3.30pm to 5pm at the Philip Street Communities and Families Precinct.
“Additionally, Council’s recruitment team will be onsite at Philip Street Families and Communities Precinct on Friday 20 May from 10am to 2pm and Friday 27 May from 1.30pm to 3.30pm to answer any recruitment questions regarding the role,” he said.
“Further details including the position description will be listed on Council’s website.”
Applications are now open and close at noon on Friday 3 June.
