Unity in the community with artwork created during NAIDOC
Gladstone Regional Art Gallery & Museum invites community members to join local artists during NAIDOC week as they bring their artistic visions to life.
Taking place on Tuesday 9 July and Thursday 11 July, community members are invited to paint a hand which will be displayed at the annual Luminous event and to help create the 6-metre-long banner for the NAIDOC march.
Gladstone Region Acting Mayor Chris Trevor said the artwork acts as a visual language in exploring the history and culture of the First Australians.
“The artwork reflects this year’s NAIDOC theme, ‘Voice, Treaty, Truth’ by bringing the community together to share in the experience,” Councillor Trevor said.
“It’s a contemporary way to acknowledge how First Australians would use artwork for storytelling and celebration.”
Local artist Patricia Coleman will also be assisted by community members to help bring her artwork on the NAIDOC banner to life.
A NAIDOC exhibition will also be launched at the Gallery & Museum with art from the First Australians, heritage works from the Gallery & Museum’s collection, as well as voices, memories, images and cultural connections on display until 3 August.
