Science and symphony among the many events taking place this weekend
There will be no shortage of things to do in Gladstone this weekend with several entertaining and informative events taking place.
It all starts at 7pm on Friday 27 August with Queensland Symphony Orchestra’s Symphony Under the Stars returning to Gladstone for the ninth consecutive year.
Supported by Gladstone Regional Council, Symphony Under the Stars will be held at the Marina Parklands with this year’s theme, Around the World taking the audience on a musical journey stretching many continents.
On Sunday 29 August, it is all about science with Queensland Museum presenting the World Science Festival Gladstone Community Day.
Taking place from 9.30am-3pm at the Gladstone Entertainment Convention Centre (GECC), this free and action-packed program for the whole family will include a range of science activities from launching rockets to virtual reality experiences.
The World Science Festival Gladstone Community Day includes science shows and pop-up talks, as well as free ticketed workshops including one with popular science commentator Dr Karl Kruszelnicki.
Gladstone Region Mayor Matt Burnett said Dr Karl will answer all your science questions virtually due to border restrictions currently in place.
“This workshop will be hosted by Australia’s best science host, Dr Rob Bell and will kick off at 4pm with a mind-blowing science show with Big Bang Education, followed by Australia’s favourite science communicator Dr Karl who will answer all your science questions virtually,” Councillor Burnett said.
“Other free but ticketed events include Flying Drone Workshop: Search and Rescue held at 10.15am, 11.30am and 1.15pm, and Future of Sport Workshop to be held at 10.30am, 12.30pm and 2pm.
“Non-ticketed presentations include the Big Bang Science Show at 10am, 11am, 1pm and 2pm, as well as the Queensland Museum Pop Up Talks at 10.45am, 12.45pm and 1.45pm.
“Please visit the GECC website (www.gladstoneentertainment.com) to book tickets for one of the World Science Festival Gladstone Community Day ticketed events and for more information about the big day.
“You can also visit the GECC website for information about Queensland Symphony Orchestra’s Symphony Under the Stars, however bookings are not required to attend.”
The magnitude of events on offer doesn’t end there with the Gladstone Multicultural Festival, proudly supported by Council, taking place on Saturday 28 August at Tondoon Botanic Gardens.
The annual Tondoon Botanic Gardens Bonsai Weekend (28-29 August) will also take place, held in conjunction with the Gladstone Multicultural Festival.
Finally, those looking for a city escape can head to Spring in the Vale, an all-ages camping and BYO Music Festival to be held in Miriam Vale on Saturday 28 August from midday until late.
Showcasing fantastic musical acts by talented artists from across Queensland as well as stalls, art exhibitions, food and workshops, this is a not-to-be-missed family-friendly event.
