In response to recent events surrounding the COVID-19 cases in Greater Brisbane, GRC and its events management contractor Events Queensland, have made the difficult decision to postpone events scheduled to take place at the Brisbane to Gladstone (B2G) Village.
These events include:
- Gladstone Regional Council’s B2G Village Opening Party (cancelled)
- Gladstone Regional Council’s B2G Village Yachtsman’s Long Lunch (postponed)
- Gladstone Regional Council’s B2G Village Seafood Festival (postponed)
- Gladstone Regional Council’s B2G Village Line Crossing Party (postponed).
Events Queensland director Matthew Turich said it was disappointing B2G Village events could no longer go ahead but said the health and safety of attendees was paramount.
“Obviously we are disappointed Brisbane to Gladstone Village events can no longer take place, but it’s important to note they’ve only been postponed, not cancelled, meaning we can deliver these great events to the community later this year,” Mr Turich said.
“We are glad the 73rd Gladstone Ports Corporation Brisbane to Gladstone Yacht Race can still go ahead and that trophy presentations can still take place.
"Events Queensland commends Gladstone Regional Council for their leadership during this difficult time.”
Gladstone Region Mayor Matt Burnett said that while it was disappointing to cancel or postpone events within the B2G Village, he was pleased Brisbane to Gladstone Yacht Race competitors would receive the recognition they deserve.
“It’s been a long 12 months for many of our yachties after the cancellation of last year’s race due to COVID-19 restrictions, so it’s fantastic to see the race go ahead this year despite the late withdrawal of some yachts,” Councillor Burnett said.
“I’m sure all yachties were glad to hear that Greater Brisbane’s three-day lockdown was lifted today, paving the way for this great race to occur.”
Cr Burnett said people interested in watching the start of the Brisbane to Gladstone Yacht Race can tune into a live stream of the race start.
“Coverage of the live steam, proudly sponsored by Gladstone Regional Council, begins from 11am tomorrow (Good Friday) with the race beginning at noon,” he said.
“You can watch the race start by visiting the Brisbane to Gladstone website (www.brisbanetogladstone.com), Brisbane to Gladstone Yacht Race Facebook page or Gladstone Regional Council’s Facebook page.”
The Gladstone Yacht Club will host the trophy presentation acknowledging the efforts of the yachtsmen and yachtswomen competing in the 73rd Gladstone Ports Corporation Brisbane to Gladstone Yacht Race, with Central Queensland University kindly offering its facilities as a contingency.
The Gladstone Yacht Club event, to be held on Easter Sunday (4 April), will feature live music and trophy presentations with food and drink available for purchase.
The presentation ceremony for the multihulls will take place at the Gladstone Yacht Club function room from 1pm-3pm, while the presentation ceremony for the monohulls will commence at 3pm.
Cr Burnett said that in addition to the Gladstone Yacht Club event, there was plenty to see and do at the Gladstone Harbour Festival.
The Gladstone Harbour Festival (1-4 April), organised by Gladstone Festivals and Events and supported through Council’s Community Celebration Fund, will continue as advertised.
“Gladstone Harbour Festival will keep attendees entertained across four days and four nights with music, rides, food, drinks, sideshow alley and nightly fireworks displays,” he said.
“Tonight, it’s all about family fun with three amazing children’s shows – Sesame Street, Dora the Explorer and SpongeBob Squarepants, while Friday night is Gladstone Regional Council’s Fantastic Friday Night featuring Miami 80s in Paradise.
“Saturday night is Gladstone Festivals and Events Volunteer's Sensational Saturday Night featuring Nashville's World on Tour – a five-piece cover band covering all types of country music and it all wraps up on Sunday night with two amazing tribute shows – Lady Gaga and Pink.”
