Ecofest continues to grow spreading strong environmental messages
Interest in Gladstone Regional Council’s environmental event, Ecofest, continues to grow annually with 6202 people attending last Sunday’s (2 June) event.
Gladstone Region Acting Mayor Chris Trevor said the number of visitors drawn to Ecofest had exceeded 2018 attendance figures.
“Gladstone Tondoon Botanic Gardens was the ideal venue for the environmental event, incorporating fun performances, presenting environmental information and providing family-orientated activities,” Councillor Trevor said.
“Thousands of Gladstone Region residents and visitors gained an insight into community impacts on the environment and discovered ways that individual actions can unitedly help make a difference to our planet.
“The Ecofest 2019 theme “Slim Your Bin with a Low Waste Diet” reinforced the importance of reducing the amount of waste we, as a community, contribute to landfill.”
Cr Trevor said Ecofest attracted attendees of all ages and all walks of life.
“Stallholders reported good attendance through their displays with attendance at all the free activities steady all day,” he said.
“The Whale Tale and Reptile/Creepy Crawlies show were popular attractions and informative presentations by guest speakers were well attended.”
Cr Trevor said crowds were keen to find out more about the Mirai Hydrogen fuel cell car on display while an Ugly Mugs initiative and Pledges of Hope added visual reminders of the event’s environmental messages.
“Attendees were able to learn about sustainable waste reduction to the benefits of recycling, composting and worm farming – small actions which can help make a big environmental difference,” he said.
