Communities to decide on how playgrounds are replaced or upgraded
Summer is the perfect time to explore the great outdoors and Council’s parks and recreational areas are just some of the options available for residents to get outside and have some fun.
As Council continues its commitment to engage with the community, residents have a chance to make their voices heard in relation to six playgrounds located within the Gladstone Region.
All six parks were identified to need a replacement or upgrade.
In July 2020, the Queensland Government announced its 2020/21 COVID Works for Queensland program, with Gladstone Regional Council receiving $5.2m to deliver nine projects during the current financial year.
From those funds, $427,200 was allocated to a playground replacement program, which will fund works in the following parks:
Replaced Parks (two design options to choose from):
- Air Sea Rescue Park, Seventeen Seventy
- Bunting Park, Calliope
- Toonee Park, Kin Kora
- Goonananga Park, South Gladstone.
Upgraded Parks:
- Memorial Park, Gladstone
- Turkey Beach Park, Turkey Beach.
A portion of those funds were also used to replace playground equipment at Frank and Francie Hart Park on Curtis Island, with community consultation undertaken during December 2019 and January 2020.
Gladstone Region Councillor Natalia Muszkat said community members will be able to have their say on the six park upgrades via Council’s online Conversations platform from today (25 January) until 7 February.
“The aim of these upgrades is to provide playground elements and associated infrastructure that offer challenging, but hazard-free opportunities for a range of ages,” Councillor Muszkat said.
“The community will have two design options to choose from for each of the parks set for replacement.
“From there they can vote on their preferred option and those results will be gathered and shared.
“This voting period also presents the perfect opportunity for parents to get their children involved, as I’m sure they will have plenty to say on what they’d like to see at their local park.”
