Callout for Giant Rat’s Tail grass research field day
To aid in the continued management of Giant Rat’s Tail (GRT) grass, Gladstone Regional Council together with Biosecurity Queensland are hosting a research field day.
To aid in the continued management of Giant Rat’s Tail (GRT) grass, Gladstone Regional Council together with Biosecurity Queensland are hosting a research field day.
Taking place in Mount Tom on Saturday June 8, Gladstone Region Councillor Peter Masters encouraged all landholders to take part in the field day, which will provide the latest information on the progress of the GRT research trial.
“GRT is deemed restricted matter under the Biosecurity Act 2014 and community members have a general biosecurity obligation to help with its management,” Councillor Masters said.
“These field days enable both Council and the community to determine the most effective and up-to-date control measures.”
Cr Masters said trial plots have been sectioned into several different areas which undergo differing management techniques.
“A part of the research trial is to understand the effectiveness of different controls, such as spray equipment or fire, when placed in different scenarios,” he said.
The day will also provide information on the Taskforce Herbicide Subsidy Scheme and weed spraying equipment available for hire from Council.
“Council provide the subsidy scheme to enable landholders to not only manage GRT infestations, but to ensure our region works towards being compliant with the Biosecurity Act 2014,” he said.
“To assist landholders, Council loans a range of spraying equipment to landholders for the management of invasive pest plants within the Gladstone region.”
