The International Council of Museums (ICOM) established International Museum Day in 1977 to increase public awareness of the role of museums play in the development of society, and the day has been steadily gaining momentum ever since.

In 2019, International Museum Day garnered record-breaking participation with more than 55,000 museums hosting events in some 150 countries.

Due to the current COVID-19 health emergency, this year’s International Museum Day has gone virtual with no physical events being held in the Gladstone Region.

However, there is still a way to become involved via the International Museum Day Art Competition.

The Art Competition is centred around the 2020 International Museum Day theme: Museums for Equality: Diversity and Inclusion.

Split across three age groups (0-11, 12-17 and 18+), entrants are being asked to colour, collage and recreate an artwork using a provided template found on GRAGM’s website and the Virtual Neighbourhood Centre, keeping in mind that it must tie in with this year’s theme.

Gladstone Region Councillor Chris Cameron said great prizes are up for grabs across each age group.

“Age group 0-11 will receive an art pack from GRAGM, while age groups 12-17 and 18-plus will receive a Ken Done merchandise pack,” Councillor Cameron said.

“Submissions can be scanned or photographed, and emailed to gragm@gladstone.qld.gov.au, along with a brief explanation of your piece and how it relates to the theme.

“The competition closes at 5pm on Monday 18 May, so please send your entry in and don't forget to include a phone number so GRAGM staff can contact you if you win.”
