Council working to control mosquito breeding sites
Gladstone Regional Council (GRC) wishes to advise it is working to treat mosquito breeding sites and investigate potential breeding sites following recent rainfall in the region.
Recent rain has caused water to pond in certain areas and has led to increased breeding of mosquitoes.
Gladstone Region Mayor Matt Burnett said GRC was undertaking routine inspections of Council land to treat mosquitoes but added that some breeding grounds fell outside of Council’s control.
“As the Gladstone Region is situated near the coast, we frequently have easterly winds,” Councillor Burnett said.
“Those easterly winds can blow in salt marsh mosquitoes that are breeding up to 50km away in areas that are inaccessible by Council.
“We know the mosquitoes are a nuisance and we are treating breeding grounds however the easterly winds are causing an influx in mosquitoes.
“The issue will subside when all larvae have matured into adults and have died, and the larvicide takes effect in Council controlled areas.”
