Council hopeful of removing algae scum as soon as possible

Gladstone Regional Council personnel have developed a plan to remove algae scum from an Agnes Water creek near the main beach area.

The work will commence as soon as possible pending confirmation of access to the required work area.

Gladstone Region Mayor Matt Burnett said contractors were being engaged to remove algae scum from near the closed entrance of the creek that stretches up to Arthur’s Park.

“Cleaning out the algae scum will help to reduce the strong smell and improve the aesthetics for locals and visitors to the beach,” Councillor Burnett said.

“Council understands the creek’s smell and appearance has had nuisance impact on the nearby community, however this has been a natural event following recent high tides and a large volume of rain where the sea algae was transported into the creek.”

It is anticipated that the planned work will assist to reduce the current level of impact until the creek is naturally flushed.
