Council closed the Derby Street Pad site in 2020 for remediation works after comprehensive testing revealed minimal traces of asbestos fibres within stockpiled soil and in parts of the drying beds. Soil and air quality testing indicated low risk of persons being exposed to elevated airborne asbestos. During this site remediation, Council has been investigating options for removal of affected soil.
Employee, community safety and the health of our environment remain Council’s priority and our teams have been focused on finding the safest method for removal of remaining spoiled material.
Planned works
Work has been awarded to specialised Contractors to remove the impacted soil. Earthmoving equipment will be operated under controlled conditions with three, dog-trailer tipper trucks used to transport the contaminated soils to the Benaraby Landfill.

- Low level noise from the earthmoving equipment and trucks is expected.
- Increased truck traffic on the loop route during works.
- Along Derby Street, please plan for trucks entering and exiting the site.
