Volunteer Marine Rescue Gladstone (VMRG)
Radio call sign: VMR446 Gladstone VHF Channel: 82
VMRG, in cooperation with Gladstone Harbour Control, effectively maintain a 24hour watch of this area on VHF Channels 16 and 82.
VMRG volunteers are from throughout the local Gladstone region and they actively work together to facilitate assistance, support and promotion of boating safety to the wider community.
VMRG is one of approx. fifty volunteer “not for profit” organisations in Queensland whose prime responsibility is ‘Saving Lives at Sea’, with the objective to:
- minimise loss of life and property in the marine environment,
- reduce pain and suffering, and,
- provide assistance, education and advice to members of the community.
VMRG achieves this by providing on-water search and rescue, incident participation and medical emergency services along with a radio monitoring service and a radio repeater for use by all boat users. VMRG also conducts training in these areas as well as land-based operational support roles of administration, provision of equipment and consumables, maintenance and training.
Annually, VMRG is called upon to undertake around 80 marine incidents, independently and in conjunction with other Emergency Services organizations. In addition, VMRG provides a safety assistance service as part of the activities for the Brisbane to Gladstone Yacht Race, Boyne Tannum Hookup, and the Port Curtis Sailing Club races, to name a few.
As a ‘Not for Profit’ organization, VMRG relies mainly on membership fees for income and the efforts of volunteers to run the operation. It is through generous gestures and donations that, not only does VMRG benefit, but many others, by enabling the squadron to provide the best possible service in delivering its responsibility of “Saving Lives at Sea” to the recreational boating community.
VMRG Management Committee meets on 3rd Monday of each month at the base, 268 Alf O’Rourke Drive (building adjacent to the public boat ramp).
Meeting Room available for hire. Seating for approx. 70 people. Amenities incl. digital technology and kitchen facilities. Bookings via VMRG website.
