Public access to Reg Tanna Park duck pond to close temporarily for weed mitigation
Council wishes to advise the duck pond at Reg Tanna Park, located at Glenlyon Street, will be closed off from public access for several hours from 10am tomorrow (Thursday 27 February).
Council staff will commence the first round of weed control to rid the pond of water lettuce.
The park itself will not be closed off, but the walking path around the pond will be off limits to ensure the safety and protection of community members.
Gladstone Region Mayor Matt Burnett said the weed control method, suitable for water weeds and sensitive areas, will involve spraying the perimeter of the weeds and waiting for them to breakdown and sink.
“The staged approach will allow Council to monitor dissolved oxygen levels to ensure fish and other animals are not impacted by the sinking weeds,” Councillor Burnett said.
“This process can take up to 10 days before the weeds die off and sink, and Council anticipates several applications will be required over the coming weeks.
“Council would like to thank the community for their patience while all control options have been explored.”
